Since the beginning of time, our people have had our own distinct spiritual beliefs. However, as a sign of good faith and friendship with the early French settlers, many Mi’kmaq allowed themselves to be converted to the Roman Catholic faith, including Membertou and twenty-one members of his family, who converted at Port Royal in 1610.
The Roman Catholic faith continued to be an important part of Mi’kmaw life at Bear River. St. Anne’s Chapel was built in 1831 under the guidance of Abbé Sigogne, a highly respected church official and friend to the Mi’kmaq of Bear River. It is the oldest Catholic Church west of Halifax and services are still held there today.
Today the majority of Mi’kmaq are of the Roman Catholic faith, but many also live by traditional Mi’kmaw spiritual beliefs.
