Elders have a very special place in Mi’kmaw culture. Respected for their wisdom, vision, and understanding of our past and culture, Elders are also the keepers of our oral history and traditions. Without our Elders, much of our unique way of life would be forgotten or lost.
The Elders have seen many happenings at Bear River, such as the gatherings of the Chiefs from the seven districts, who came from what is now Cape Breton, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Maine. The Elders have also seen the coming of the Europeans, particularly the French, who became our friends.
The Elders have great wisdom and are very wise in the words they speak. We are humbled and have great respect for our Elders. When an Elder dies, it is a great loss for our people.
