A Mi’kmaq Creation Story

  • The Creator, created the first born, Na’ku’set, the Sun.
  • The Creator also sent a bolt of lightening across the sky that created Wskitqamu - the Earth. From that same bolt, Glooscap was created out of the dry earth. Glooscap lay on Wskitqamu, pointing his head, feet and hands to the Four Directions. Glooscap became a powerful teacher, a supernaturally strong spiritual leader (kinap) and a healer (puoin) who used his powers for the wellbeing of all.
  • From another bolt of lightening came fire, animals, vegetation and birds.

Glooscap watched them move about the world freely and wished to have the same freedom. A third bolt of lightning was sent out, causing Glooscap to stand and move freely on the Earth.

  • The Creator sent Nukumi, Glooscap’s grandmother, to teach him how he should live. She was created from a rock transformed into the body of an old woman who became his Elder.
  • Glooscap and Nukumi traveled the Earth. They met his mother, Níkanaptekewísqw, who could tell about the cycles of life and the future. Born from a leaf on a tree, she brought love, wisdom and the colors of the world.
  • Glooscap and his grandmother lived with Nikanaptekewisqw for a long time, but, after a while, Glooscap and his grandmother decided to leave to go north.
  • Before he left, Glooscap told of the Great Council Fire that would send seven sparks that would fly out of the fire and land on the ground – each as a man. Seven more sparks flying out in another direction would become women.
  • Glooscap’s words came to pass. When the new people awoke, they were naked and lost. They asked Glooscap how they should live and Glooscap taught them.
