Mi'kmaw Ceremonies

Smudging Ceremony

Fasting

Fasting is done in order to cleanse the body and the mind to better communicate with the Creator. Anyone entering this ceremony must fast (abstain from food) for at least four days.

Vision Quest

A personal and sacred ceremony, the Vision Quest helps an individual to communicate with the Creator, and gain a greater understanding of nature and spirit. It is undertaken by a person reaching a critical point in his/her life, such as the transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Talking Circles

Talking Circles are used to resolve issues or problems in our community and to provide guidance.

The Pipe Ceremony

After a period of fasting, the pipe ceremony takes place for the purpose of exchanging information. The pipe ceremony is given by the community’s healer or medicine man.

Smudging

Smudging is not an actual ceremony, but an act of blessing which precedes all Mi’kmaw ceremonies. The smoke from the smoldering sweet grass is thought to cleanse the body and spirit.
