Our people have long recognized that the Bay of Fundy is a special place and have our own legend of how Fundy’s great tides came to be.

The native god Glooscap wanted to take a bath, so he told Beaver to build a dam across the mouth of the Bay in order to trap the high water for his bath. Beaver did this, but it made Whale unhappy. Whale wanted to know why the flow of water had stopped.
Not wanting to anger Whale, Glooscap told Beaver to break the dam. However, Whale became impatient and began to break the dam himself with his mighty tail. This caused the water to slosh back and forth with such a force, that it continues to this day.
